Plants: Our designs give you color and interest all year. Because many people love to garden but just need help with plant selection and design, this is an ideal phase to do as a kit. We select and deliver the right perennials for the right spot, actually designing the plants on site. Then we can leave them for you to dig in, saving the cost of our labor to install, or you can leave them completely for us to install and we'll do the hard part.

Sod/Turf: Our three top choices are:
- Reveille - Xeric bluegrass sod needing water just once a week when established.
- GTF - Premium, emerald-green bluegrass that will put your neighbor's
lawn to shame.
- Seed - bluegrass, xeric choices, and native pasture grasses.

Edging: Safety should be your main concern here. The purpose of edging is to create a barrier between grass, which is invasive, and your planter beds. The old-school method was to maintain a shallow trench or "bed edge" between the grass and planters. The advent of a hard edging material was more appealing because of the labor reduction. However, edging is not the panacea. Grass plants still tend to skip over and under edging. So it's important to kill the grass before it creeps over the edging too much, and the edging provides a hard line along which to do that. If you spray a grass killer along the edging a couple times a year, you will avoid the problem of grass invading your beds where it then becomes a major problem and creates a maintenance headache. Metal edging is cheap and easy to install, which is why it is so popular. However, going back to our philosophy of "quality first," we recommend Bend-A-Board thick wood-look vinyl safety edging. The difference in cost is much less than the hospital trip for your children or pets.
Mulch: Bark or rock? Fabric underlayment or none? Neither is perfect, but here's how you make your decision. Rock looks good the first year because the fabric underlayment required under rock covers the existing weeds. However, over time dust and silt settles on the top surface of the fabric and becomes a haven for new weed seeds blowing around in the air. After that, weeds are constantly rooting in the rocks, which then become a maintenance nightmare. Rocks are also very hot and not conducive to growing plant materials without over-watering. The only good applications for rock are in large expanses of windy areas where no plant materials are required or in dry streambeds. Bark mulch is the ideal companion for plants because it helps moderate soil temperatures and retains moisture. However, we use only small bark mulch with no underlayment. Underlayment defeats the purpose because it won't allow the bark to bind with the soil, so you get slipping and blowing of the mulch. If laid at a minimum of two and one-half inches, small bark suppresses weeds because when the weed seeds blow in, they disintegrate before reaching the dirt where they could germinate. Until your plant materials spread and cover the bark mulch, you should plan to "freshen" it in the spring for the first two to three years. Additionally, this means that all weeds should be eradicated before the mulch is laid. Once bark mulch is installed, it must be "watered in" to start the binding process to the dirt.

Rock Accents: A good use of rock is for accents such as dry streambeds, or small areas of cobblestones for drainage, or large boulders for asthetic purposes. Rock accents can complement the plantings and give diversity to the overall plant design. See the picture gallery below for examples of Dry Streambeds.
