Tips, Trick & Tonics

TIPS, TRICKS & TONICS
by Jerry Baker

SPRING AND SUMMER GARDEN NOTES:

If you will follow these few steps, using the tonics and mixes below can far surpass your greatest expectations.

  • Dry Feed your entire property (growing areas) with a mixture of any formula of dry fertilizer adding one pound of sugar and one pound of Epsom salts per 2,500 sq. ft. bag and apply at half the recommended rate, using a hand-held broadcaster spreader. Do this Now!
  • Liquid Feed as soon as the temperature gets about 40 degrees and stays there, every three weeks, before noon, until October 15th. Use this formula: One can of beer, one can of Coke (regular, not diet), one can of apple juice, one cup lemon-scented dish soap, one cup lemon-scented ammonia, one cup liquid lawn food, one cup human urine. Mix together and apply with a 20-gallon base and sprayer (before noon).
  • Insect and Disease Prevention begin with prevention and cleanliness (use this formula every two weeks after 6 p.m.): One cup antiseptic mouthwash, one cup chamomile tea (five tea bags), one cup chewing tobacco juice (bags), one cup human urine, one cup lemon-scented dish soap. Mix together and apply with a 20-gallon sprayer over 3,000 square feet.
  • Chemical Control will only be with fruit tree spray at 25 percent rate added to above.
  • Grub Control can be taken care of with Grubex by O. M. Scott.
  • Snail and Slug Control is a mixture of 75 percent palletized lime and 25 percent aluminum sulfate. Apply with a hand-held spreader.
  • Mole Control is taken care of by destroying the source of food (grubs and worms) with Grubex.
  • Dog Damage can be prevented with a mixture of four cups of dry Tide soap in a bag of palletized lime and applied from a hand-help broadcast spreader.
  • Feeding and Watering Potted Plants and Containers is easy when you cup the center of baby diapers to fit the bottoms of pots, cover with soil, plant and water (diaper holds 30 times its weight in water).
  • Clean Old Pots by soaking them in a bucket of hot water with four false teeth cleaner tablets.
