Fish are an integral part of our pond ecosystems for two reasons:
- Often they become pets, and they are colorful and graceful in the water, so they are wonderful to watch;
- They contribute to a balanced ecosystem.
Koi are the first choice because of their hardiness and selection of colors and patterns. Comets and goldfish are less expensive yet colorful alternate choices.
We provide a few small starter koi for your pond when we build it to help start balancing the water. Once the water is balanced, you may want to add to the family. We can provide these fish for you or you can locate them on your own.
These are the only animals in your home that will be truly low maintenance--they never have to be fed or watered. Most people who do feed their fish do so for their own enjoyment. Feeding the fish can enhance their colors, make them grow faster, and some foods provide immunity enhancers. You can even train them to eat out of your hand! Do not feed the fish at all when the water temperature is below 50 degrees. In cold months, the fish slow down a lot and generally hang out on the bottom of the pond. As long as you keep your pond running 24/7, the water will stay aerated properly.
When we build your pond, we construct "fish garages" for them to hide from predators and get a little extra shade.
