Glossary:

• Arbor - Larger than an arch and often enclosed on one side to form a secluded nook. It's usually made of wood or plastic, but you can train plant materials, such as evergreens, to form part of the enclosure.

• Arch - Often placed over a gate or to mark a transition in the garden. An arch is usually rounded at the top but it can also be square or curved in the Gothic style. It is usually made of wood or metal.

• Colonade - A series of connected, narrow arbors forming a covered walkway.

• Gazebo - A freestanding shelter used for relaxing or entertaining and as a focal point. The gazebo is a distant cousin to the folly, which is a very elaborate, highly-stylized structure of certain architectural periods.

• Pergola - Like an arbor but larger and more imposing. It is usually square and may shade a walk, drive or dining area. It is especially romantic when supporting huge branches of grapes or wisteria blooms.

• Trellis - A two-dimensional plant support made of wood, metal, or plastic. Some vines grow by wrapping tendrils around their support; others attach themselves with sticky "feet." A few wind their branches through latticework and need a bit of twine or wire to help them stay put. So know what vine you're growing before you choose a trellis style.
